The recent M-commerce Secure Insight Consumer Discovery Report, is from the findings of both eBay and PayPal.

The study found that across both desktop and mobile devices, over 95% of Australians now use the internet for research. These people are now almost as likely to have made an online purchase (71%) as one offline (75%).

The report says that the last 2 years can be seen as a turning point for Australian retail. There are 3 major factors for this turn around.

1. a higher Australian dollar
2. more mobile phones
3. more offshore competition

It is expected that online sales will surpass $5bn in Australia in 2014 (compared with only $155 million in 2010) and it is estimated that 33% are using their mobile devices to conduct online transactions. A far higher number, about 2/3, are using their mobiles for product discovery and research.

According to Nielsen research of approx 3200 people in October, 2013, the number of people using mobile commerce is up from 12% of online Australians in January 2011 to 32% today.

According to Melani Ingrey of Nielsen, the increasing sizes of new smartphone screens has contributed to this growth in mcommerce. Ingrey says: “Much of this growth has been driven by the ever increasing penetration of mobile devices across all demographics as well as strong attitudinal shifts.”

Nielsen’s 10 year analysis revealed:

  • Australians spending almost a day per week online
  • More than a third of online Australians own connected devices that didn’t exist 10
    years ago
  • 38 per cent of Australian households have four or more internet enabled devices
  • 7 in 10 Australians are active social media users

eBay and PayPal have forecast spending via mobile devices to hit $5.6 billion in 2012. In 2010, the figure was just $155 million.

Approximately 25% of the population use smartphones for online transactions compared to 16% who use tablets.

Ingrey says: “Much of this growth has been driven by the ever increasing penetration of mobile devices across all demographics as well as strong attitudinal shifts.”
The eBay/Paypal report forecasts smartphones penetration to include 64% of online Australians compared with 51% in 2011. These figures suggest a raised awareness and interest in mcommerce and mobile marketing.
